Cal/OSHA has revised its fall protection regulation to help keep workers in residential construction safe while working at heights. The revised regulation, which took effect on July 1, calls for a change in trigger height—the height where workers must use fall protection—and applies to all employees performing residential framing or roofing tasks.
Under the regulation, employers must provide fall protection for employees working from heights of six feet or more. Acceptable fall protection can include:
- Construction guardrails
- Personal fall arrest systems
- Scaffolding
- Personal fall restraint systems
The changes resulting from these revised regulations could require a significant investment from your customers. State Fund wants to keep them informed and help them keep their workers safe. Therefore, please make sure your clients with workers at risk of falls are aware of State Fund’s Safety Equipment Grants Program; State Fund’s grant was specifically implemented to help employers purchase the equipment necessary towards protecting their workers from falls.
For more details about the regulation, State Fund has produced two videos to help familiarize you with the changes and provide safety tips for roofing contractors. Please watch and share Protection Regulations: What You Need to Know—in English or Spanish; and Roofing Safety—in English or Spanish. We also encourage you to take a look at State Fund’s summary of the changes or view their on-demand webinar.
